Hello! Can you explain why Bernard is expert in Megamind? I watched the movie dozens of times but still don’t get it. Was it about books he had in the cart? Thank you!

Hi!

I think it’s because he works at the Metro Man Museum. The books, I think, were something he was putting away; the cart he was pushing looks like a library cart. Probably the Museum has a collection of Metro Man books.

Metro Man’s main foe is Megamind, so the Metro Man Museum must have a good amount of information on Megamind. And Bernard, working there, would be expected to be knowledgable about all the exhibits. Since he’s an expert on Metro Man, Bernard would probably also be considered an expert on Megamind.

I also think it’s possible that when Roxanne says “you’re an expert on all things Megamind, right?” to ‘Bernard’, she’s talking him up to convince him to go along with her plan.

Bernard might consider himself an expert on Megamind–he clearly thinks he knows enough to recognize Megamind and Megamind’s technology. Really, though, he doesn’t recognize Megamind, or the de-gun!

This is part of the reason I think that published materials on Megamind–like the library books he and Roxanne read–aren’t really very accurate.

If Bernard, who could be expected to have studied Megamind (since he’s studied Metro Man) can’t even correctly identify Megamind and Megamind’s de-gun–well, how much does he really know about Megamind?

Honestly, I think that Roxanne, with her years of close interaction with Megamind, is probably more of an ‘expert on all things Megamind’ than Bernard.

What if Lilo and Stitch is both Megs(or if not him then Minion) and Waynes fav movie(what if both Minion and Wayne accidentally watched it when it first came out on theaters at the same time) and when Roxanne finds out its both their favs they have movie marathons with the whole gang every now and then(double date?) I saw the other anon and i can’t let the idea go its too sweet(Lilo and Stitch is my best friends special interest as well while Megamind is mine so I’m really excited rn)

ah, that’s cute!

I really like the idea of it being both Minion and Wayne’s favorite disney movie.

I think Wayne probably does sympathize with Stitch because they’re both so strong that it’s terribly easy for them to be destructive, and considering how I headcanon Lady Scott, I think Wayne probably has fairly strong feelings about family.

(He just doesn’t see how like Megamind Stitch is.)

Minion, of course, has very strong feelings about family/found family–oh, look, I just adopted this destructive overemotional highly-strung blue creature and now it’s mine forever.

Roxanne probably sympathizes with Lilo; they both read as autistic to me, and share some traits–special interests that involve observing and documenting other people (Lilo’s photography, Roxanne’s journalism), flashes of anger and lashing out, and a tendency to try to correct people (Lilo’s “your badness level” graphic for Stitch, and Roxanne’s “these people trusted you and you just abandoned them”, etc.)

The movie might cut a little close for Megamind, but it has a happy ending, so it’s mostly okay for him.

I think Roxanne’s favorite disney movie might be Beauty and the Beast, mostly because of the giving-Belle-a-library thing, although she probably has strong feelings about The Little Mermaid, too, and will tell anyone who listens that she’s pretty sure Ariel would have chosen to become human to pursue her passion for learning about humans even if she hadn’t ever met Eric.

Megamind probably likes Beauty and the Beast, too, although the ending where the Beast becomes human hurts a lot.

I feel like Megamind’s favorite disney movie might actually be Cinderella, which is a story about the endurance of cruelty and unhappiness, of someone lowly rewarded and raised up, a story of trying to be good and finally being good enough.

(Also I think the movie implies Cinderella tries to appear cheerful but struggles with depression– “in dreams you will lose your heartaches; whatever you wish for, you keep” and “no matter how your heart is grieving, if you keep on believing, the dream that you wish will come true.” That song seems romantic and dreamy, but it’s really got a kind of defiant edge to it.)

I keep thinking of a scene in the Code: Safeword universe where these two utter nerds roleplay as something from Star Wars- where he is from the Empire and she is a Rebel fighter who he captures and he has to “interrogate her.”

Imperial Entanglements

Roxanne, securely restrained, watches as Megamind places each of the objects he intends to use in a neat line on the metal table. He looks up at her with a wicked smirk and her breathing picks up. He must notice her reaction, because his smile widens.

“Why don’t you tell me the location of the Rebel base now, Commander Ritchi?” he asks, voice smooth and persuasive. “You know you will, sooner or later.”

Roxanne raises her chin.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” she says.

He raises an eyebrow.

“Oh?” he says. “So unfortunate. It would have been easier for you if you had cooperated, Commander.”

“Easier for you, maybe,” Roxanne says.

His grin turns sharp and he picks up the first of the objects.

“Oh, yes, easier for me as well,” he says. “But much less fun. And I have confidence that I can make you talk in the end.”

Roxanne writhes in near-ecstasy, tugging uselessly at her restraints. So close, so very close–almost–

Megamind, evidently seeing the signs of her impending climax, lowers the setting on the toy he’s using. Roxanne gives a little scream of frustration and he laughs, damn him.

“Tell me the location, Commander Ritchi,” he says.

Roxanne curses at him fluently.

“Aren’t you ready for your torture to be over, Commander?” he asks. “All you have to do is tell me.”

“I–I–”

Panting, Roxanne gazes up at Megamind–who’s looking very hot and flustered, his face flushed and the collar of his Imperial uniform slightly loosened. She licks her lips and his eyes follow the movement.

“–let me go,” she says.

Megamind blinks, surprised–not by the words, but by the tone of confidence, she thinks.

She licks her lips again, tilts her head, arching her neck. Megamind’s eyes track that moment as well, before snapping up to hers again.

Roxanne smiles at him, slow and deliberate.

“Let me escape,” she says,  “and the two of us can go there together.”

Megamind’s eyes widen.

After an exciting escape which involves Roxanne convincing Megamind to defect to the Rebellion, the two of them ‘stealing’ weapons then running and hiding all throughout the Lair from imaginary Imperial troops, commandeering a ‘spaceship’, battling their way through an attack by Imperial starfighters, and finally arriving safely at the Rebel base, Roxanne admits to herself that perhaps that roleplay session got a little bit away from them.

But neither of them mind, so it doesn’t really matter.

Idk if you’ve answered something like this before but, what do you think would have happened if Roxanne hadn’t accidentally turned off Megamind’s disguise watch in the restaurant?

I really think that he was working himself up to telling her who he really was and quitting villainy!

His comment to Minion about how Roxanne ‘will never find out’ who he really is–I think that is him trying to deceive Minion, to downplay this whole thing. No, Minion, of course I’m not wearing cologne! No, of course I’m not going on a date with Roxanne! No, of course she’s never going to find out who I really am; this isn’t a big deal!

But it is a big deal.

The novelization of the movie actually implies even more strongly that he’s planning on quitting villainy, and that he wants to tell her who he is. He says, when the two of them are talking about Megamind, “maybe he’s met someone who changed his outlook on things. He might be thinking of hanging up the whole villainy thing altogether.” Not wanting to be the bad guy isn’t something he just blurts out to Minion on the spur of the moment; he’s actually thought about it.

Megamind wasn’t planning on telling Roxanne in the restaurant, of course, but I do think he was planning on telling her–probably after the date, when he took her home.

His question to her about whether or not she’d still like him if he ‘was bald and had the complexion of a popular primary color’–that’s him testing the waters and also maybe him dropping a hint, I think. And maybe Roxanne’s response isn’t entirely encouraging, as she tells him that you should judge people based on their actions, but it’s also not the most discouraging thing ever, either. She doesn’t tell him that his ‘random non-specific example’ sounds ugly or unappealing, and she doesn’t just laugh off the idea.

She says that you should judge people by their actions, and Megamind knows that a lot of his actions haven’t been good, but he’s planning on quitting villainy; he’s made a new superhero; he’s cleaned up the city and returned all the things he’s stolen, and so maybe, maybe–

He’s not lying when he tells Roxanne that he never thought she would actually be with him, but Megamind’s always been willing to attempt impossible things.
